Which Mail & Express Trains class to actually book
Sleeper through to 1A, plus chair car and second sitting on daytime services. Sleeper carries the largest share of demand and is where the crunch bites hardest on festival dates. When Sleeper will not confirm, moving up to 3A on the same train frequently will — a more expensive confirmed berth against a cheap one that expires at chart preparation.
This is where quota knowledge actually earns its money. A mail or express stops many times, so passengers are spread across general, pooled and remote-location waiting lists — and they behave completely differently. GNWL, from an originating station, clears best. PQWL, the pooled quota shared across several intermediate stations, has a small allocation and clears poorly. RLWL, tied to a specific remote location, is the one that most often strands people who thought a low number meant they were safe. The number on your ticket tells you far less than the three letters in front of it.
Booking a Mail & Express Trains without getting caught out
- A low RLWL is not better than a high GNWL. It is usually worse. This one misunderstanding causes more missed journeys than anything else.
- Boarding at an intermediate station to save a trip into Delhi can quietly move you into a worse quota. Ask before you choose it.

What is the difference between GNWL, PQWL and RLWL?+
GNWL is the general waiting list, issued from the train's originating station, with the largest allocation and by far the best chance of clearing. PQWL is a pooled quota shared between several intermediate stations, with a small allocation that clears poorly. RLWL is tied to a specific remote location and is the one that most often fails to clear despite a low-looking number. Which one you hold matters more than the number attached to it.
My waitlist number is low. Am I safe?+
Not necessarily, and this is the most common and most expensive misunderstanding in Indian rail ticketing. An RLWL 4 can fail where a GNWL 40 clears comfortably. Should I book sleeper or 3A?+
On an ordinary date, Sleeper is fine and considerably cheaper. On a festival date on a busy corridor, Sleeper is where all the demand concentrates and 3A is often the only class that will actually confirm. We will show you both and be straight about the odds on each.
